Fake entrelac

This pattern looks like entrelac, but it spares you the time, that in entrelac you would spend on the continuous pickup of stitches.
 If you want to add color, you can use print yarn:
Cast-on a multiple of 8 + 2 edge stitches
Row 1: k1, *k6, k2tog, yo; rep from *, sl1 wyif
Row 2: k1, *k1tbl, p7; rep from *, sl1 wyif
Row 3: k1, *k5, k2tog, p1, yo; rep from *, sl1 wyif
Row 4: k1, *k1tbl, k1, p6; rep from *, sl1 wyif
Row 5: k1, *k4, k2tog, p2, yo; rep from *, sl1 wyif
Row 6: k1, *k1tbl, k2, p5; rep from *, sl1 wyif
Row 7: k1, *k3, k2tog, p3, yo; rep from *, sl1 wyif
Row 8: k1, *k1tbl, k3, p4; rep from *, sl1 wyif
Row 9: k1, *k2, k2tog, p4, yo; rep from *, sl1 wyif
